![]() By modulating autophagy, it may be possible to enhance the wound healing process. This process is central to removing damaged and toxic organelles and proteins in cells. One of the fundamental cellular metabolic processes is known as autophagy. To overcome this resistance, we are developing genetically-modified immune cells and antibodies targeted against specific tumor cell types. This is a major mechanism of how tumor cells escape natural immune surveillance in the body. In terms of cancer immunotherapy, it is well established that immune cells in the tumor microenvironment are suppressed by the very cancer cells they are attempting to attack. Because they are extremely difficult to treat by conventional therapies, we are developing novel cancer-targeting immunotherapies using sarcomas as models for solid tumors. Sarcomas are a very diverse class of solid tumors that occur at high frequency in pediatric patients. Solid tumors present unique challenges in treatment due to intrinsic and acquired resistance to therapy. ![]() Together, our goal is to reduce the lag time involved in translating laboratory discoveries into the clinic. The Life Sciences International Program (LSIP) program provides support for international educational and research experiences that contribute to global health initiatives.
